Can a complete beginner book cricket coaching?
Beginning in a busy group net can feel daunting because the ball moves quickly and other players may already know the routines. A private lesson removes that pressure. Freddie can slow each exercise down, explain why it works and give you enough repetition to make the movement feel natural.
Coaching is available for junior and adult beginners. If you are returning after a long break, the dedicated adult cricket coaching page explains how sessions rebuild technique safely.
What happens in your first cricket lesson?
Your first 60-minute session is practical and tailored rather than a test. It normally includes:
- A simple goal-setting chat: what brought you to cricket and what you would like to achieve.
- Movement and safety: a suitable warm-up, safe spacing and how to use the net.
- Batting foundations: grip, stance, balance and making controlled contact with the ball.
- Bowling foundations: a comfortable, repeatable action and a clear target.
- Catching and throwing: ready position, soft hands and an accurate return.
- A next-step plan: two or three useful priorities, without overwhelming you.
The balance changes to suit your interests. Someone preparing to join a social team may cover the whole game, while a child who loves batting can spend more time building confidence against a moving ball.
Do beginners need their own cricket equipment?
Contact Freddie before the session to confirm what is available at the chosen venue. Comfortable sports clothing and clean trainers are a sensible starting point. If you plan to buy a bat or protective equipment, wait until you understand the correct size and fit; buying too early often means paying for unsuitable kit.
Hard-ball practice requires the appropriate helmet, pads, gloves and abdominal protection. Safety and confidence come before pace, and no beginner is rushed into facing a hard ball.
How many beginner lessons will you need?
There is no compulsory package. One lesson can give you a safe introduction and clear practice points. A short run of three to six sessions gives most beginners more time to make their basic movements repeatable and prepare for a club or school environment. Progress depends on age, coordination, practice between lessons and the goal you choose.
Sessions cost £45 for 60 minutes. See the London cricket coaching cost guide for what is included and how to compare coaching options.
