Start with the ECB programmes
For young children the ECB's own programmes are a natural first step. According to the ECB, All Stars Cricket is for ages 5 to 8, and Dynamos Cricket is for ages 8 to 11, either as the next step after All Stars or as an introduction for children new to the sport. Dynamos sessions combine a warm-up, skill-building and a short match, using soft balls and light wooden bats. Availability and delivery depend on the individual club, so contact the host directly.
Find a club
The ECB club and programme finder filters by location, gender, category and age group, including junior and indoor options. Ask any club about its junior structure, coaches, safeguarding lead and kit requirements before your child joins. Freddie is Juniors Head Coach at North London Cricket Club, so treat that connection as one option to compare rather than a recommendation to join it; see about Freddie for the sources.
Where private coaching fits
Club and school cricket give match experience and team context. Private sessions can add individual feedback on batting, bowling or fielding at the child's pace. They cannot guarantee selection or progress. If trials are the goal, read county trial preparation and the parent's guide to junior development. To start with lessons, see coaching for beginners or junior coaching.
Before your child starts
- Ask which protective equipment is needed. See junior helmet and kit rules.
- Confirm the venue, supervision and emergency arrangements.
- Agree in advance whether any video will be recorded; see video privacy and safeguarding.
